TIGA welcomes record-breaking Maths GCSE results and massive increase in Computing students

By August 21, 2014 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association for the UK videogame industry, has responded to today’s GCSE results, welcoming the record-breaking increase in A-C grades in Mathematics, and the surging popularity of Computing.

The proportion of GCSE Mathematics students achieving at least grade C was 62.4 per cent, compared with 57.6 per cent in 2013 – with the 4.8 per cent increase being the largest one-year rise in the exam’s history.

Computing, a core subject for the programming focused game development industry, has seen a remarkable increase of more than 294 per cent.

Whilst on the surface the 14.6 per cent decline in students studying physics – the first fall in 10 years, looks like bad news, it is largely due to the introduction of a new “further additional science” course for the first time this year. This course provides a different pathway for students to study the same content as the separate science GCSEs, whilst still being awarded three science GCSEs. In 2014, Further Additional Science saw 21,119 entries.

Dr Richard Wilson, CEO, TIGA, commented:

“Overall these GCSE results are very positive for the UK videogame industry. It is encouraging to see maths remaining the number one subject overall, it is good news that results are better than ever this year and it is great to see a surge in popularity in Computing.

“The games industry is highly skilled, high tech and export focused, and will only become more so given the continued emergence of new digital markets. So it is essential that we continue to encourage entry and high performance for core subjects like Maths, Physics and Computing at GCSE level.”
