TIGA, the network for games developers and digital publishers and the trade association representing the video games industry, has welcomed today’s news that there has been a breakthrough in the Brexit negotiations, particularly because EU citizens living in the UK and vice versa will have their rights to live, work and study protected.
Brexit talks are set to progress to trade negotiations. The European Commission’s Chief Negotiator, Michel Barnier, believes that “sufficient progress” has now be made on citizens’ rights, the financial settlement, and the Irish border.
Commenting on the developments, Dr Richard Wilson, Chief Executive of TIGA, said:
“TIGA welcomes the breakthrough in Brexit negotiations. Today’s announcement makes a smooth exit more likely and increases the chances of a comprehensive final deal.
“TIGA is particularly happy to see that EU citizens living in the UK and vice versa will have their rights to live, work and study protected. EU nationals currently make up 15 per cent of the UK games industry and are a crucial part of our workforce. We are delighted to see them receive the certainty and assurances they deserve.
“However, tough decisions will need to be made in the next phase of negotiations. The single most important priority for the UK video games industry is that we continue to have access to highly-skilled workers from the EU and EEA with minimum red tape and cost. The UK video games industry competes on a global level and needs access to the best and brightest talent.”
