TIGA urges all games businesses to comply with Principles for Online and App-Based Games

TIGA, the network for games developers and digital publishers, said today that all games developers, digital publishers and platform holders that make games available to UK consumers must ensure that they comply with all consumer protection laws and specifically the industry wide principles for online and app-based games published by the Office of Fair Trading in 2014.

TIGA made the comments following the decision today by the Competition and Markets Authority to refer three online games to the Advertising Standards Authority to consider whether these games have breached the Advertising Codes and consumer law by directly encouraging children to buy, or to ask their parents to buy, additional game features.

Dr Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, said:

“Today’s decision by the CMA is a reminder that games businesses must continually ensure that they adhere to all consumer protection laws and especially the set of industry wide Principles for Online and App-Based Games. I would encourage all games businesses to contact TIGA to access our guides to enable developers, publishers and platform holders to comply with the industry wide Principles.”
