TIGA hosting 2014 Smartphone & Tablet Games Conference to help devs of all sizes survive and thrive in mobile games market

By September 1, 2014 Press Releases

Expert speakers include Miniclip, Matmi, Dolby, Nomad Games, State of Play Games, Stevens & Bolton, Bossa Studios, DR Studios, GameSparks and Cancer Research. Official media partner is PocketGamer.biz

TIGA, the network for developers and digital publishers in the UK, is hosting its annual Smartphone & Tablet Games Conference, sponsored by Dolby Laboratories and Stevens & Bolton LLP, on the 18th September 2014. The venue will once again be IDEALondon in Shoreditch. We are also delighted that PocketGamer.biz is supporting the event as our official media partner.

As TIGA’s own research shows, mobile & tablet gaming is now the number one platform category for UK developers, with mobile development being the main focus for 49 per cent of UK studios in 2013 – up from 39 per cent in 2012. Startups and micro studios also dominate the UK games industry. 59 per cent of all studios now only have between one and four permanent staff, 44 per cent of UK games companies started up in the last two years, and 64 per cent started within the last five years.

On top of this, mortality rates for games companies are higher than ever – 29 per cent of games businesses went out of business in the last five years. So whilst the mobile gaming opportunity is bigger than ever before, the increased competition, reliance on self-publishing and financial vulnerability of smaller businesses also makes it a tougher market to succeed in than ever before.

It is because of these factors that TIGA is once again bringing together UK industry leaders in mobile game development to share insight, best practice and experience, so the UK’s mobile devs can not only survive, but thrive in 2014 and beyond. Speaking will be industry experts including:

  • Tom Lingard, Stevens & Bolton
  • Saad Choudri, Miniclip
  • Jeff Coghlan, Matmi
  • Clive Roberts, DR Studios
  • Imre Jele, Bossa Studios
  • Andy Vaughan, Dolby
  • Katherine Bidwell, State of Play games
  • Hannah Keartland, Cancer Research
  • Don Whiteford, Nomad Games
  • Griffin Parry, CEO GameSparks

The topics covered will be of the utmost value to the full range of businesses that make up the UK’s rapidly growing mobile gaming ecosystem, and will include:

  • Monetisation
  • Discoverability & marketing
  • Tools & tech
  • Implications of OFT guidelines
  • IP protection
  • Taking mobile audio to the next level

Attendees will be able to share ideas for improving their mobile games & studios, network & make useful new contacts in addition to being inspired by, and learning from, both the successes and failures of others. The event will also provide the valuable opportunity for mobile devs and digital publishers to have their technical, business and marketing questions answered.

The event will run all day from 9.30am – 4.30pm and be followed by networking drinks, with lunch, food & refreshments provided throughout.

Tickets are free for TIGA members, £40 for non-member developers, and £100 for other attendees. Space is limited so attendees are politely asked to register here as soon as possible.

Dr Richard Wilson, CEO, TIGA commented:

“TIGA is committed to supporting the UK’s mobile gaming industry, which is becoming more important, and more challenging, every day. Events like this which share insight, best practice and facilitate networking are of huge value to startups in particular.

“I’d like to thank Dolby and Stevens & Bolton in particular for supporting the 2014 TIGA Smartphone & Tablet gaming conference, and by doing so, further contributing to the UK videogame industry.

“It’s exciting times for mobile and tablet developers and publishers. However, if this sector of our industry is to fulfil its potential it is essential we continue to share best practice and information. TIGA’s Smartphone and Tablet Conference will enable developers to learn, share and network.”
