On 17 April 2020, The Chancellor Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP announced that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme has been extended to reflect continuing social distancing measures.
Following on from yesterday’s announcement to extend the UK-wide lockdown, the Government have extended the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme until the end of June.
The scheme allows firms to furlough employees with the Government paying cash grants of 80% of their wages up to a maximum of £2,500 per month. It was originally open for three months and was backdated from the 1 March 2020 until the end of May. The Chancellor has now announced that the scheme will be open until the end of June, allowing more jobs to be protected as the UK battles coronavirus.
