TIGA, the network for games developers and digital publishers and the trade association representing the video games industry, backed the Government’s objectives to create a favourable environment for technology businesses, improve digital skills and increase investment in AI, robotics and cyber security. TIGA made the comments following the publication of the Government’s Digital Strategy.

Dr Richard Wilson, TIGA CEO, said:

“TIGA, like the Government, wants to see the UK’s digital sectors remain world-leading. The UK’s digital sectors are economically significant and should be a central part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy. The UK video games industry already contributes £1.2 billion to UK GDP. We are a successful high technology sector with the potential to create still more high skilled jobs, export more content and make an even greater contribution to education and training.

“Digital industries, including the video games sector, have an important role to play in our post-Brexit world.  TIGA strongly supports plans to accelerate the adoption of new digital infrastructure including 5G, providing free education for digital skills qualifications for adults who currently lack them, making the UK the best place to set up and grow technology businesses and investment in cyber security.

“The Government is also right to invest more AI and robotics research and commission a review of artificial intelligence. Developments in AI and robotics have the potential to increase productivity, innovation and growth.”
