Nintendo's possible high "revenue share" should boost the UK video game sector, says TIGA

By June 22, 2012 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing the
UK video games industry, greeted the news that Nintendo will offer large
revenue shares to developers producing titles for the Wii U console as a
positive development for the UK video games sector. Although firm details have
not yet been announced, a report on the Develop website draws attention to
“insane incentives” which are said to be “perfect for indie
devs”.

TIGA hopes that this shows that Nintendo has understood the importance of
encouraging creative developers and points to digital distribution as the
future. Nintendo would allow developers to sell their games via its eShop
channel.

In the UK, 80 per cent of games industry start-ups are ignoring retail in
favour of mobile, online and social media titles, a study commissioned by TIGA
found in February 2012.

Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA, said:

“While we do not
yet have confirmation of Nintendo's firm intention, news that it is looking to
provide great incentives for developers to distribute games via its eShop for
the Wii U is to be applauded.

“We know that the UK indie scene is very strong and that such a move would
provide a welcome boost not only in terms of finance but also in respect of creativity.”
