On 14 April 2020, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport released ad-hoc analyses not included in any of their standard publications. TIGA welcomes the statistics, which reflect a growth in the digital industries and highlight the contribution that video games and other creative sectors make to the UK economy.
DCMS have provided estimates of GVA in the DCMS sectors by quarter, from 2010 to 2018. GVA from the DCMS sectors was approximately £38,048 million in the first quarter of 2010. In the last quarter of 2018, this had risen to £51,720 million. Specifically, in the digital sector, GVA increased from £27,729 million in the first quarter of 2010 to £36,810 million in the last quarter of 2018. The creative industries also saw a jump in GVA from £17,377 million in the first quarter of 2010, to £28,547 million in the last quarter of 2018.
DCMS also published ad hoc statistics on employment in the DCMS sectors, by employment type and length of time in current employment for the year of 2018. The IT, software and computer services sector saw 597,000 people employed in 2018, with 488,000 of those employed for a year or more. The Film, TV, Video, Radio and Music sector saw 133,000 people employed and 55,000 self-employed workers in 2018. 103,000 employed people in this sector were employed for a year or more, and 46,000 self-employed workers in this sector were also self-employed for over a year.
