TIGA says awarding the GameCity Prize to Journey shows the value of innovation and the independent sector within videogaming

By October 25, 2012 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing theUK games industry, has congratulated Journey for winning the this year's
GameCity Prize.

The association welcomes the award which
aimed at being the Booker Prize of videogaming. It says the award shows the
world that games can be celebrated as a cultural artform and that massive
budgets are not necessarily needed in order to make a game that has great
impact.Although Journey was created by US indie
developer thatgamecompany, the achievement of the game shows developers across
the world what can be done with imagination.

The British games industry, it adds, was built
on innovation and imagination and that games tax relief will promote more risk
taking and pushing of boundaries when it is introduced in April.

Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA, said:
“As
soon as Journey was released on the PlayStation 3, it was obvious that it was a
game which showed great promise. It was created on a low budget and uses flair
and imagination rather than big budget graphics and concepts. There is a
massive place for games such as these and it great to see such recognition
within the industry. “

There is no doubt that games such as Journey
will inspire games makers across the world and prove to non-gamers the creative
talent needed to make compelling games. Many of our members are self-publishers
operating on small budgets with tiny teams and the titles they produce are
outstanding. Games tax relief will free up even more money for companies such
as these and enable them to take bigger creative risks. These are exciting
times.”

TIGA's own awards will take place on November
1. The TIGA Awards will celebrate and honour the best games,
the best people and the biggest contributors to our sector. As well as focusing
on the best games in the industry over the last 12 months, TIGA wants to
highlight best practice and reward those in the industry contributing to its
long-term innovation.
