New Advanced Maths Premium provides boost to industry

By February 28, 2018 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry, has welcomed the Government’s announcement that schools will receive £600 for every additional pupil who takes an advanced maths qualification.

Minister for Schools Standards, Nick Gibb MP, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Elizabeth Truss MP, announced the Advanced Maths Premium, a new fund to help schools and colleges increase the number of students studying maths after GCSE.

Schools and colleges will receive an extra £600 premium for each additional pupil taking the one-year AS maths or the Core Maths qualification. This could mean £1,200 for each additional pupil who takes the two-year A level in Maths or Further Maths. The £600 premium is equivalent to 15% of the base funding per student. The premium will be available from September 2018.

TIGA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Richard Wilson OBE, said:

“We are delighted that the Government is taking steps to increase the uptake of maths and further maths. Maths is incredibly important to the future of our economy and success of the video games industry.

“Studying Maths at AS and A Level opens a lot of doors in terms of further study and career options. Individual students choosing maths at school can add around 10 per cent to their future earnings.

“Increasing the number of people studying maths is important for our industry. We depend on highly skilled, numerate graduates to compete with studios from across the world. The measures announced by the Government today should boost the pipeline of pupils who go on to study STEM and Maths at university.”
