Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee calls on Government to learn lessons from gaps in worker and business support

By July 29, 2020 Press Releases

On 29 July 2020, the Chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee, Darren Jones MP, wrote to Secretary of State for BEIS Rt Hon Alok Sharma, outlining a number of key issues for the Government to address in its approach to supporting businesses and workers.

The letter follows a series of evidence of hearings on the impact of coronavirus, and highlights issues regarding gaps in support for workers, the tapering of support for workers through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), the health and safety of workers throughout the pandemic and the problems arising from unpaid business rents and overheads.

The letter suggests that the Government review the success of the various loan schemes and the behaviour of banks throughout the coronavirus crisis, and that they consider the need for targeted sector support going forward.
