University of Greenwich games course achieves TIGA Accreditation

By December 11, 2023 No Comments

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry, is pleased to announce the accreditation of the following games course at the University of Greenwich.

BSc (Hons) Games Development

The Games Development degree is part of a wide range of degree programmes offered by the University of Greenwich to their 20,000 students in London and Kent. There were 133 undergraduates on the Game Design and Development course in 2021/22. The programme offers two alternative pathways with a common first year and alternative module options in the second and third year but both lead to the same degree title. The programme is deliberately a very broad-based course, straddling both the game art and programming disciplines in the first year. The programme best supports careers in indie game development. The course provides a basis for further specialization leading to roles in AAA development.

Dr Richard Wilson OBE, TIGA CEO, said:

“University of Greenwich’s Games Design and Development programme affords students with excellent opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations as part of module delivery and assessment. The provision of a rapid prototyping module and opportunities for game jams promote industry skills. Non-technical soft-skills such as team work and communication skills are also encouraged via the Final Year Group project. The inclusion of a specific career development module focussing on employability, specialist roles and portfolio development with guest talks from Sony PlayStation and ex-graduates is commendable.”

Dr Jacob Habgood, TIGA Educational Adviser and Director of Education Partnerships at Sumo Digital Group, said:

“Greenwich can be proud of a well-structured, modular course which makes the contract between student and university clear and helps to maintain consistent standards over time. This is reflected in their NSS results which have weathered lockdown well despite the challenges that it has created across the sector.”

Jonathan Weinel, Academic Portfolio Leader – Games, University of Greenwich, said:

“The Games Development course has recently been revamped and we’re really excited that we have been awarded TIGA accreditation. At University of Greenwich we offer a wide-ranging technical programme which exposes students to many exciting areas of games development, ranging from technical art to programming. What we really value about working with TIGA is the input they provide from the games industry, which is absolutely invaluable in helping us to ensure our course aligns with the needs of industry and gives our incredible students the best chance to succeed in their future careers.”
