TIGA Diplomas and Train2Game

By May 7, 2014 TIGA News

Following some enquiries on twitter we wanted to address some questions that have been put to us about TIGA Diplomas and Train2Game, the distance learning company.

Q – What are the qualifying criteria for a TIGA Diploma?

To qualify for a TIGA Diploma, students have to:

  • successfully pass each tutor marked assignment (TMA) in order to progress to the following module. For example, The Games Designer course consists of 42 lessons that cover the basics of Games Design and Games History through to the development of a student’s own video game based on their own ideas. T2G uses TMA results and pass rates to monitor and measure progress.
  • pass three sets of exams. The TIGA Examinations Committee, which includes Mark Eyles, Principal Lecturer at the University of Portsmouth and Carsten Maple, Professor of Applicable Computing at the University of Bedfordshire ensures that these examinations are set at an appropriate standard. They also check the marking of the examinations to ensure that they are assessed to the required standard.

Q – What is your criteria for endorsing courses?

TIGA would consider endorsing courses that are industry relevant and which have good quality control processes in place. Train2Game operates a variety of quality control procedures, including the provision of qualified tutors and a system for supporting students. More information about this can be found on the Train2Game website.

Q – What is a TIGA Diploma equivalent to?

Professor Mark Eyles, Principal Lecturer at the University of Portsmouthand Carsten Maple, Professor of Applicable Computing at the University of Bedfordshire, reviewed and benchmarked the Train2Game Development and Design courses. This was carried out against existing higher education qualifications and they were found to be broadly equivalent to the first two years of an undergraduate honours degree.

City and Guilds, a leading vocational education organisation in the UK also uses Train2Games course content, which is studied to get a TIGA Diploma, in its own courses.

Train2Game developed the content for the courses with industry practitioners at DR Studios: CEO Clive Robert, former Head of Development for Hasbro, and Tony Bickley, former Head of European Development for Konami.
