The Government responds to written question on Video Games Tax Relief

On 26 January 2021, Jesse Norman MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, answered a written question on how many firms have claimed Video Games Tax Relief since it was introduced in 2014.

Jonathan Gullis, Conservative MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, requested the data.

The Government highlights HMRC statistics on Creative Industry tax reliefs. The data shows that between 2014-15 and 2018-19, 1,445 claims were made for Video Games Tax Relief. Norman’s answer can be read in full below:

Jonathan Gullis: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, how many firms have claimed Video Games Tax Relief in each year since its introduction in 2014.

Jesse Norman: HMRC publish annual statistics on the number and cost of claims for Research and Development (R&D) tax reliefs. The latest release can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/corporate-tax-research-and-development-tax-credit(opens in a new tab).

Table RD1 gives the number of claims for the R&D tax relief split by all schemes since the relief was introduced for SMEs in 2000. The number of claims for R&D tax relief can be used to approximate the number of companies.

Table 4.2 gives the number of companies which have claimed Video Games Tax Relief in each year since the relief was introduced in 2014.
