Cross Platform Production Tools – £15M
The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £15m in projects that stimulate innovation in the UK digital media sector.
The UK is a world leader in creative businesses that are at the cutting edge of technological innovation across industries such as film, television, video games and visual effects. This generates a significant level of inward investment, and is a key factor in major international film productions coming to the UK. This competition will fund business-led R+D projects that lead to new tools and applications in these industries, and help to maintain the UK’s competitive position.
The competition aims to support projects addressing convergence in digital technologies, and covers film and television, online video, animation, visual effects and video games including pre-production, production and post-production processes.
Projects must be business-led. The competition will fund feasibility studies as well as collaborative R&D projects.

Frictionless Commerce – £2.5M
Digital technologies are making ‘frictionless commerce’ increasingly possible, in which the barriers and costs to transaction become dramatically reduced. Whether it is crowdfunding investment, aggregation and recommendation services or the delivery of niche or ‘long tail’ content through subscription services, new opportunities are emerging for businesses, investors and consumers to interact and build value.
However, for all parties in the value chain, from creators through to consumers – there remain areas in which the process of transaction remains difficult. The Technology Strategy Board is attempting to address the innovation barriers to frictionless commerce with a CR+D competition leading to efficient digital transactional environments for the content industries
