An Engineering student at Robinson College, University of Cambridge, took just weeks to develop Backgammon for Antix using the standard Antix tool chain – the Antix Game Development Kit (GDK). A single binary of the game can be played on phones, tablets, TVs, STBs, PCs and other devices utilizing the unique capabilities of each device. That single binary can be beamed across different devices so that both the game and game state can be shared socially and virally between users. The GDK can be downloaded free by Antix registered developers and is fully integrated with the Eclipse and Visual Studio IDEs.
The developer, Alex Biondini commented, “As someone who has had no prior experience of writing games, it was made easy for me that I didn’t have to worry about the chipset or OS without any effect on performance. I was able to create just a single binary that could be sent from one user to another virally, would resize the game for different screen sizes to give the best visual effect, and would support all manner of input devices such as mobiles and IR controls for TVs and touch for phones and tablets. Few developers will struggle with Antix because the development environment is so orthogonal and familiar to developers of C and C++.”
Francis Charig, Antix’ Founder said, “We encouraged Alex because we wanted to see if those who are new to gaming can take advantage of the capabilities we uniquely provide. If bright undergraduates like Alex can start building pervasive, multiplayer games, then the studios with all their experience developing the AAA titles will have no obstacles with which to contend.”
