Jim McGovern hails computer games industry optimism at Dundee event

By July 20, 2012 TIGA News

Dundee West MP Jim McGovern today welcomed the optimism expressed by computer games industry representatives at a TIGA hosted event in the city.

The speakers thanked Mr McGovern for his efforts in securing a government u-turn on tax reliefs for the industry, and expressed confidence for the future of the sector both in Dundee and the rest of the UK.

The development and implementation of the tax relief, announced by George Osborne in the last budget, was also discussed. Jim McGovern questioned the Chancellor about this on June 26th in the House of Commons, where he was told that a consultation would begin shortly.

Once the consultation is complete the government’s policy will be put before the European Union in order to ensure that it does not violate state aid legislation.

Jim McGovern said;

“Today’s conference was very productive, and I welcomed the acknowledgment from the industry of my efforts to secure the tax relief policy.

””The confidence they have in the future of the industry both locally and nationally is heartening, now we must make sure that during the consultation and the EU procedure the policy that is implemented is the right one for the industry.”

Mr McGovern concluded;

“I will continue to press the government to make sure the policy that is implemented is the right one, and I will continue to support an industry that brings both jobs and investment into Dundee.”

Ends.
