EU adopts adequacy decisions allowing data to flow freely to the UK

By June 29, 2021 Industry News

On 28th June 2021, the European Union formally recognised the adequacy of the UK’s high data protection standards. The decision will allow the continued seamless flow of personal data from the EU to the UK.

Formal adoption of the decisions under the EU General Data Protection Regulation and Law Enforcement Directive allows personal data to flow freely from the EU and wider European Economic Area to the UK.

This decision ensures that UK businesses can continue to receive personal data from Europe without any additional arrangements.

The UK government has formally welcomed the move.

According to the Government, ‘the free flow of personal data supports trade, innovation, and investment, assists with law enforcement agencies tackling crime, and supports the delivery of critical public services sharing personal data as well as facilitating health and scientific research.’
