TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry, has welcomed the fact that the Government has restated that UK based organisations will be able to bid for EU funding in 2019 and 2020, and will continue to receive funding for the lifetime of the project. The Government will underwrite the payment of such awards, even if projects continue beyond the UK’s departure from the EU. EU programmes include Horizon 2020, used by businesses in the video games industry.
The Government commitment was contained in a Written Answer by Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, which can be found here.
Dr Richard Wilson, Chief Executive of TIGA, commented:
“TIGA is pleased that the Government has given businesses certainty over EU funding streams for the next few years. Programmes like Horizon 2020 provide important funding to the UK video games industry and have led directly to the release of critically acclaimed video games.
“As we leave the EU, the UK needs to retain or replace funding streams that benefit the video games industry. The Government can do more to support the video games industry. TIGA has called for the introduction of a Video Games Investment Fund to provide pound-for-pound match funding for original intellectual property game projects to improve games businesses’ ability to access finance.”
