TIGA is calling on the Government to lead international cooperation and welcome displaced people from the conflict in Ukraine. An estimated half a million[1] Ukrainians are already internally displaced after fleeing their homes and the currently expected number of displaced Ukrainians is over 7 million[2].
TIGA urges the Government to bring forward a serious humanitarian response plan, including safe routes for those fleeing from persecution. An ambitious commitment is also needed to resettle Ukrainians in the UK.
TIGA was pleased to see the Home Secretary’s announcement made earlier today, extending visa rules for Ukrainians. TIGA welcomes the extension of the family visa scheme and looks forward to receiving more information on how UK businesses can sponsor a Ukrainian entering the country.
However, we need to do more and TIGA continues to call for the establishment of a new visa route, beyond the current points-based immigration route, family visa route and visa for temporary workers route, to ensure that those fleeing wars and persecution can apply for a visa on humanitarian grounds.
