Huawei to be removed from UK 5G network by 2027

By July 15, 2020 Press Releases

On 14 July 2020, the Government announced that Huawei will be completely removed from the UK’s 5G networks by the end of 2027. This follows a technical review by the National Cyber Security Centre in response to US sanctions.

Buying new Huawei 5G equipment will be banned after 31 December 2020, and all existing Huawei equipment is to be removed from 5G networks in the UK by the end of 2027. The existing ban on Huawei from most sensitive ‘core’ parts of Britain’s 5G network remains in place.

The government is expected to legislate at the earliest opportunity with a new Telecoms Security Bill. The bill will put the powers in place to implement this new decision.
