TIGA, the trade association representing the UK’s video games industry, has published a concise guide to regulatory issues facing the video games sector. TIGA has also updated its Best Practice Principles Guide for games businesses.

TIGA worked with Lewis Silkin LLP to produce the guide and updated Principles.

Key regulatory issues for video games businesses sets out a summary of some of the key regulatory risks, encompassing:-

  • Data Protection
  • Consumer Law
  • Loot Boxes
  • Online Safety
  • Age Ratings

TIGA has also worked with Lewis Silkin LLP to review and update its Voluntary Principles for Safeguarding Players and Positive Practices. These were first published by TIGA in 2020, following Board discussions and invitations to games businesses to provide feedback and comments.

The updated Principles make changes including refining some language to tie more closely to consumer law principles and referring to new legislation and regulatory change.

TIGA’s Voluntary Principles for Safeguarding Players and Positive Practices include:-

  • Protecting children
  • Treating consumers fairly
  • Safeguarding online communities
  • Respecting personal data
  • Spending and time management
