On 26 January 2021, Jesse Norman MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, answered a written question on how many small and large firms have claimed R&D Tax Relief since 2010.
Jonathan Gullis, Conservative MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, asked the Government for the figures.
The Government highlights annual statistics which are produced by HMRC. These show approximate data on the number of firms which have claimed R&D Tax Relief since its inception in 2000.
In the most recent documented financial year, 2018-19, a total of 59,265 claims were made for R&D Tax Relief.
The Government also points towards Creative Industry Tax Relief statistics. The data, produced by HMRC, shows that between 2014-15 and 2018-19, 1,445 claims were made for Video Games Tax Relief.
The Government has made a commitment to meet a target of 2.4% of GDP invested in UK R&D by 2027. The Government aim to extend this to 3% in the long term.
