On Monday 24 July 2020, TIGA, the trade association representing the video games industry, published a guide to claiming Video Games Tax Relief (VGTR). TIGA have paired with RSM, a leading audit, tax and consulting firm, to produce this guide which provides the key information about VGTR and the process of claiming it.
Dr Richard Wilson OBE, CEO of TIGA, said:
“Video Games Tax Relief has been crucial in enabling the UK video games industry to grow durably and compete on a more level playing field against our international competitors. It is vital to maintain, improve and enhance VGTR in order to attract inward investment and to maintain the competitiveness of the UK video games sector.
“This guide is designed to outline the process of claiming VGTR, who is eligible, the benefits of claiming and the cultural test that must be undertaken to make a successful claim. I am very grateful to RSM for working with TIGA to produce this guide. I hope that more UK games developers will claim VGTR in order to grow investment, increase employment and develop new IP.”
Matt Appleton, Tax Director at RSM, said:
“When asked to contribute to this guide, I was so happy, as video games has been a very real passion of mine for the longest time. I still fondly remember unwrapping my first computer, a Commodore 16! I am delighted that the UK Government continues to provide tax incentives to this vital sector, to enable it to not only compete but also to excel in this ever-growing global market”.
