Welsh Economy Secretary announces Digital Innovation Review

By March 20, 2018 Press Releases

TIGA, the network for games developers and digital publishers and the trade association representing the video games industry, has welcomed the Welsh Government launching a review into digital innovation, which will also consider artificial intelligence and automation. The review was commissioned by the Economy Secretary, Ken Skates AM.

The review will be led by Professor Phil Brown, Distinguished Research Professor at Cardiff University School of Social Sciences and will be undertaken within the context of the Welsh Government’s Economic Action Plan, which was launched in December. Terms of reference for the review will be published in the coming weeks.

The Plan recognises the close relationship between automation, artificial intelligence and other forms of digitalisation and identifies the transformative effect these emerging fields are likely to have on Wales’ economy, its wider public service, and on the structure of its future labour market.

Dr Richard Wilson OBE, Chief Executive Officer of TIGA, said:

“We welcome the Welsh Government’s efforts to further understand and harness the benefits of digital innovation.

“Automation, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation in general, will continue to have a significant impact on the UK economy. It is right that the Welsh Government are preparing ahead of time in order to maximise the benefits and overcome challenges as the technology develops.

“The UK video games industry is particularly interested these issues, given their impact on how people can experience entertainment. We will continue to work closely with the UK Government, devolved assemblies, and higher education institutions to ensure that the UK workforce is equipped to take full advantage of new technologies.”
