Video games in the broadband fast lane

By January 29, 2018 Press Releases

TIGA has today welcomed the news that 19 out of 20 homes and businesses in the UK now have access to superfast broadband.

Figures published by www.thinkbroadband.com have confirmed that more than 19 out of 20 UK homes and businesses now have the opportunity to upgrade their internet connections to superfast speeds of 24 Mbps or faster – more than double what Ofcom advise is required by a typical family home.

The £1.7 billion Government rollout of superfast broadband to areas deemed “not commercially viable” by industry has so far reached more than 4.5 million UK premises, the majority of which are in rural areas.

In addition to the huge benefits to our day-to-day lives that superfast speeds offer, this closing of the “digital divide” has also delivered a significant boost to local economies – creating around 50,000 new local jobs and generating an additional £8.9 billion in turnover in the areas covered by the Government rollout between 2013 and 2016.

Dr Richard Wilson OBE, Chief Executive of TIGA, said:

“It is great news for businesses and households that superfast broadband now reaches the vast majority of people.

“The video games industry is spread throughout the UK. It is a very positive development for our members that more areas have access to superfast broadband, which boosts productivity and helps our industry produce more ground-breaking games. Improved broadband infrastructure will also help start-ups grow and thrive wherever they are based.

“We are also happy that the overwhelming majority of consumers can now fully enjoy online gaming and other entertainment services.”

“As a matter of urgency, the Government must now ensure that areas without access to superfast broadband are covered. This does not just impact rural areas. For instance, only 50.3 per cent of homes and businesses in the City of London can receive superfast broadband.”
