TIGA says PC market remains crucial in light of Minecraft's continued success

By November 14, 2012 Press Releases

TIGA , the trade association representing the UK’s gamesindustry, says news that Minecraft has sold more than eight million units shows
the continued importance of PC gaming.

Developer Mojang said the game has hit another mammoth
sales target jumping from seven million to eight million in just three months. It sells a million every three months, showing steady and
consistent sales.

At a time when Halo 4 and Call of Duty are also selling
millions of copies, TIGA says this is a great time for gaming. Yet TIGA singles
out Minecraft as proof that the PC remains important despite negative
speculation over the years that it was a dying platform.

Dr
Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA, said:
“The
PC is a wide-open platform that attracts both a core and casual gaming
audience. Minecraft shows how crucial it is to gaming. It is a perfect platform
for self-publishers since there are no barriers to entry and games can be sold
either direct or via established stores such as Steam.”

Jason
Kinsley OBE, TIGA Chairman and CEO and Creative Director at Rebellion, said:
“Rebellion’s experience with
Sniper Elite, Evil Genius and our other titles confirms that the PC market
offers great opportunities for games developers. There is a wide installed base
of PCs in many markets, the barriers to entry for self-publishing are
relatively low and the potential for revenue generation is strong. I am sure
that many TIGA members will look to self-publish via the PC market.”
