TIGA backs plans to give UK businesses more control over training

By November 19, 2013 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing the video game industry, has commended plans to enable employers to choose and purchase the training their apprentices receive, and claim back money towards the costs via their PAYE returns.

The Government is expected to announce an overhaul of apprenticeships in the Autumn Statement on December 5th 2013. TIGA called for a reform to training policy as far back as 2008, proposing that the Government could issue tax credits for businesses’ expenses relating to education and training.

TIGA also recommends in the medium term that policy makers should consider broadening the types of business training that are eligible for tax relief, in addition to those relating to apprenticeships.

Dr. Richard Wilson, CEO, TIGA, said:

“TIGA supports an approach whereby employers can record their expenditure on eligible training programmes and then claim back Government support through their tax return. This is similar to the way in which the existing Research and Development Tax Credits work in the UK.

“Employers are best placed to determine the skill needs of their firms and of their employees. Enabling companies to choose the professional training provider they want should mean better apprenticeships being provided for UK staff.”
