Opportunity Knocks for Smartphone and Tablet Developers

By January 24, 2013 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing thegames industry, said today that the smartphone and tablet market offered great
opportunities for games developers and digital publishers.

TIGA made the
comments at the Mobile Games Forum in London (January 23rd – 24th),
organized by Osney Media.

Summing up on the first day’s proceedings, Dr Richard
Wilson, CEO of TIGA and Chairman of the Conference, said:
“There were three key learning points from the first day of the
conference. Firstly, the market for smartphone and tablet gaming is growing and
the UK is an attractive market because there is a relatively high proportion of
players and paying customers. Research undertaken by the internet technology
business comScore suggests that almost three quarters of all new handset
acquisitions in five EU countries in October 2012 were smartphones. Other
research predicts that one billion smartphones will be shipped globally in
2013.

“Secondly, small studios can be successful. If studios focus initially
on one particular platform and one geographic region, make effective use of
analytics and productivity tools, and ensure that the game is of high quality,
then the chances of success are higher. A co-ordinated PR launch of a game will
also maximise the chances of success, as the award winning studio Neon Play has
admirably demonstrated.

“Thirdly, world leading high technology businesses
such as ARM will enable mobile phones and tablets to become increasingly
powerful devices, providing new features such as face recognition and
supporting console quality games. Smartphone and tablet gaming presents great
opportunities for games developers and digital publishers.”

TIGA is working to enable developers to take advantage
of the opportunities in the smartphone and tablet market.

TIGA is holding a
conference on January 31st in London (https://www.tiga.org/events/tiga-mobile-and-tablet-games-event-2013).
