New iPhone 5 will boost opportunities for UK game developers

By September 21, 2012 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association
representing the UK games industry, says the larger screen of the new iPhone
will enable game developers to produce even better games.

The screen of the iPhone 5
will be a 16:3 ratio rather than the 3:2 of previous models and this will help
games that have on-screen controls as well as give artists a greater space to
play with, the organisation says.

 The faster processor with
its A6 chip will also enable developers to boost the performance of their
games. Add to that the 4G support for better mobile connectivity, Facebook
integration and Game Center challenges and the iPhone is shaping up to be a
perfect gaming device.

But TIGA also warns that the
larger screen will cause problems for existing gaming apps. Apple said older
apps will run with black bars and developers will have to go to the expense of
modifying their back catalogue to work with the new device.

A survey by TIGA showed that
game developers are increasingly publishing their own games with 47 per cent of
those polled saying they did so. Of those, 67 per cent publish for the iPhone
and 45 per cent for the iPad which will benefit from the launch of iOS 6 on
September 19.

Smartphones, says TIGA, are
a crucial platform for the videogame sector.

Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of
TIGA, said:

“When new technology
arrives, it creates a buzz and expectation and it seems Apple's new iPhone 5
and iPod Touch will produce better gaming experiences for new games.

“Developers will be
able to take advantage of the faster chip, higher frame rates and better
graphic capabilities with the larger screen in particular being great for games
that have on-screen controls.

“The App Store and iOS
have already proved to be a winning combination for many of our members and we
can see that continuing for some time to come.”
