Government provides GDPR advice for small businesses

The Government has recognised the challenges facing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in preparing for the introduction of the Data Protection Bill and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and has offered SMEs compliance guidance.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is leading on providing guidance and support to help organisations prepare and have published several resources on their website, available here.

The ICO has also:

  • Launched a dedicated helpline service for smaller organisations. More information can be found here.
  • Updated its ‘SMEs toolkit’ to reflect the requirements of the GDPR, available here.
  • Simplified its ‘12-step’ GDPR preparation guidance, available here.
  • Published FAQs for SMEs, available here.
