Games industry gives evidence to Scottish Affairs Committee

By October 14, 2010 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK games industry, UKIE, the Association for Interactive Entertainment, and Abertay University, gave evidence yesterday to the Scottish Affairs Select Committee on the Video Games Industry in Scotland.

Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA said:

“TIGA was pleased to be able to give evidence to the Scottish Affairs Committee. Scotland has many exciting technology and games businesses including, 4J Studios, Cobra Mobile, Denki, Dynamo Games, Proper Games, Digital Goldfish, Ruffian, Black Studios, Rockstar North, Firebrand Games, Cohort Studios, Tag Games, Codeplay, 3MRT, e4e, Extra Mile Studios, and TRC media. Scotland also has an excellent education system, including universities and colleges such as Abertay, Napier, Glasgow Caledonian, West of Scotland and Dundee College. If the Scottish games industry is to fulfil its potential then it must be effectively supported by Government and by its agencies.

“TIGA told the Scottish Affairs Committee of the need for the UK Coalition Government to introduce Games Tax Relief to enable the UK games industry in general and the Scottish games industry in particular, to compete on a level playing field. TIGA also called on the UK Coalition Government to enhance the existing R&D tax credits and to increase the supply of computer science and mathematics graduates.””

UKIE Director General, Michael Rawlinson said:

“UKIE fully backs the Scottish Affairs Committee’s inquiry and we were delighted to give evidence to the Committee alongside TIGA yesterday. By presenting a united industry front we have a much better chance of achieving our end goal of having Games Tax Relief introduced for the video games industry.””

“The evidence that we gave yesterday reiterates our support for the introduction of TIGA’s Games Tax Relief proposal for the video games and interactive entertainment industry. We also look forward to continuing to work with a TIGA led group to advance the cause for Games Tax Relief.””
