Alarm bells ring as UK becomes less competitive for global talent

By January 23, 2018 Press Releases

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK video games industry, said today that while the UK was a great place to do business, a a new survey by Adecco showing the country falling behind in terms of its ability to attract, retain and educate skilled workers, should set alarm bells ringing.

The 2018 Global Talent Competitiveness Index ranked the UK eight in the world, down from third place last year. Its ranking was undermined by its performance on tolerance and gender equality.

The top ten countries have several key characteristics in common and share one major feature: they all have a well-developed educational system providing the social and collaboration skills needed for employability in today’s labour market.

Meanwhile, London is ranked the 14th most competitive city in the world, which is up slightly from 16th the previous year.

Dr Richard Wilson OBE, Chief Executive Officer of TIGA, said:

“The UK remains one of the top countries in the world for attracting global talent and London is one of the most competitive cities in the world, which is great news. However, the UK’s fall from third to eighth position  in the Global Talent Competitiveness Index should set alarm bells ringing in Goernment and needs to be reversed.

“In order to compete on a global level, creative and high technology sectors like the video games industry need access to global talent. Staff are our most important asset because they are the programmers, designers, engineers, artists and producers who create ground-breaking games.

“As we move ahead with Brexit, we need to continually improve the skills, training and education of the UK workforce, and retain access to highly-skilled people from the EU, EEA and beyond. The UK needs to be open to the best and brightest talent from around the world.”
